Getting paid $500 to book a single sales call sounds like a pretty sweet deal. Until you realize what you signed up for. Here's the dealio... Businesses will fork out a whole lotta moolah for you to book calls into their calendar. And in the world of lead generation, there are 2 common ways to get paid:
Clients are willing to pay $500 per qualified sales call. Which is 2x–3x more than they’re willing to pay per lead. So, being the single-brained entrepreneurs that my biz partner and I are… …we saw the bigger number and offered pay per meeting. Which was a living nightmare! Why? I’ll tell you why! Because most small to medium businesses have zero sales skills, systems, or processes. Which turned us, a lead generation agency, into our clients’ sales team. Very annoying and time-consuming. Sure, we’re willing to follow up with positive replies 10 times, call prospects, and reach out to them for our own client acquisition process…which is a full-time job. But having to fulfill on that for clients felt like a quantum wet willy. I mean, imagine having to create cold call sales scripts for 10 different clients, in 10 different industries, with 10 different offers? Gross. By doing this, you literally become an entire marketing and sales team. All because the bigger price tag gave you googly eyes. Here’s what we missed: Getting paid twice as much doesn’t mean you’re making twice as much. Especially when you’ve signed yourself up for a whole second job to collect the money. So we stopped offering pay per meeting. Now?
They handle the follow-up and turn that interest into a sales call. We focus on finding more people who want what they sell. Boo yah. But this only works if you’re clear about who does what. If a client expects a calendar full of booked calls, handing them positive replies is gonna go down like a fart in an elevator. So we make the deal clear from the beginning: We generate the leads, your team calls them. The lesson? Before you slap a bigger price tag on your offer, take a look at the extra work hiding behind it. You might be giving yourself a whole new job with a very fancy invoice. Last week I learned a business lesson so profound I told me GF to slap it on my tombstone. Let me spill the beans for ya… When you start a service-based business, it’s easy to get pulled into the orbit of what I call “the spray and pray black hole”. Meaning? That in the beginning, you are willing to serve anyone with a pulse to get the wheels churning on your biz. Big mistake. Take our cold email agency, for example. In the beginning, my partner and I worked with all sorts of markets: HVAC,...
There’s a special place in internet hell for marketers who make huge guarantees, take thousands of dollars from a client… …then disappear the second it’s time to honor the guarantee. And one of my newest clients learned this lesson the expensive way. You see, the most disgusting thing I see on the internet is the lack of moral ethics from sleazy marketers. They promise insane results with guarantees… Only to not deliver their clients results, rob their clients with expensive retainers, and...
Last week, a client sent me a message that made my body rise into the air, my arms snap outta place, and my torso contort like I was mid-exorcism. Then I smiled. Because they’d booked 31 calls in 2 weeks. The message: sorry if you have to squint you're eyes for this My client literally had to pause because they were overwhelmed, had to optimize their fulfillment, and hire just to handle the new volume. So then why does everyone and their mother say: "CoLd EmAiL dOeSn'T wOrK" I just proved...
