Years ago, I was at a crossroads in my career.

I'd shot up the totem pole as an electrician, going from apprentice, to journeyman, to foreman, to superintendent.

For those of you unfamiliar with the hierarchy of the trades…

The superintendent is the big cheese of the entire construction site.

As a strapping young lad with just 27 years of life under my belt, I thought I'd made the big time. At certain points I had 200-300 workers underneath me.

But boy was that a frickin' nightmare.

First of all, 80% of the guys I worked with were middle-aged divorced alcoholics who couldn't read or write.

So being in charge of their safety while working on a 500,000 volt job site was… a wee bit stressful.

Never mind the fact that if you make any mistakes, the results are often as follows:

1. Electrocution
2. Permanent injury
3. Death
4. Arc flash
5. Explosion
6. Knocking out an entire grid and cutting off power for thousands of people

…good times.

On top of the insane work hours (13 days on, 1 day off, 12 hours a day), I'd often get phone calls in the middle of the night telling me to drive to the next state over (often a 2-5 hour drive) to deal with a power outage.

At 27 I was feeling like 67. I've still got the 7 wrinkles on my forehead to prove it.

Anyway…

I was desperate to get promoted so I wouldn't have to live on these construction sites, so I could live in civilization (most of the sites were in Booneville, often leaving me to subsist on gas station burritos and energy drinks), and so I could actually have a shot at dating.

But if you've ever worked a job you know how dangerous chasing a promotion can be…

1. Kissing the feet of some emotionless psychopath just to gain favor
2. Hoping that your best interest is kept in mind (it's not)
3. And the empty promises of "just wait 5 years and you'll get it"

I couldn't imagine waiting 5 years in construction purgatory for the slight chance of getting a promotion.

So one day I thought about my options:

1. Go back to school, acquire $100k+ in debt, just to get a lower-paying job.
2. Start my own construction company, but that requires debt, headaches, and a lot of competition

Or just educate myself.

So I thought to myself: "What if I just created my own MBA?"

I bought podcasting, blogging, and online business courses. I joined cohorts, memberships, and communities.

And boy did 99% of them suck...
