A brief lesson on opportunity

Last week I sent an email and published social media content saying that I was hiring.

What was supposed to be a way for me to hire the best candidates (which I did btw, in case you applied), turned into a lesson about human behavior.

In case you missed it…

I shared publicly that I was hiring a copywriter. However, there was a test with various instructions to make sure:

  • You could listen and follow instructions
  • You knew how to "think" like a marketer
  • You knew how to write without Claude slop.

This resulted in 600+ submissions, my inbox getting nerfed, and my DMs (which I said were off limits) melting like a nuclear reactor, Chernobyl-style overwhelm.

At first I was overwhelmed myself.

But then, as I started slowly going through the applications 1-1, I realized something sad…

90% of the applicants did not follow instructions.

Wow, hiring contests are great filtering mechanisms, and if you're ever trying to hire someone, I suggest you use the same strategy I did here.

For example:

  1. "Mr. Parker" is not correct lmao. Sure, my first name is a last name, but if you can't figure that out, you're gunna have a lot of problems in this biz.
  2. I specifically told applicants to put why they wrote their email draft, and why they chose the angle, in the email reply, not the Google Doc. One click to open the email submissions showed me instantly that people didn't follow the rules.
  3. The slop. After writing it 3 times and saying in the application instruction Loom DO NOT SUBMIT AI SLOP, can you guess what happened? Go ahead, take a guess…. Yup, AI slop all over the place. Probably going to have to do a complete reset on my computer from all the filth submitted.

So despite 600+ applicants, literally only 10 people followed the instructions.

That's 1.6% of applicants who can listen and follow instructions.

Now don't get me wrong…

Could I have been more clear? Sure, you can always be more clear. But legendary copywriter David Garfinkel even chimed in saying the instructions were hunky dory.

Anyway, my point is this…

If you see an opportunity and you don't think you have the skill or talent to qualify, you're wrong.

Curiosity and willingness to be a sponge is really the most valuable asset to have.

I didn't even choose the best writer. I chose the people who were curious to learn my systems and strategies, and who proved they could follow instructions.

Never hesitate to chase an opportunity, but make sure you take your time, understand the fine print, and you're literally ahead of 98.4% of the population.

All I got for today.

Parker

Can I ask you a question? Ok sure, that might've been a question by itself, so I'll ask you another question… Do you actually read AI writing? Like when you check your inbox, do you open the email, see that it's boring, loaded with words that have no depth behind them, try to read through the lack of flow from sentence to sentence… …and think: "wow, that was a novel concept" If you're like me, and billions of other human beings, the answer is no. As soon as I get a scent of em dashes, no x,...

If I had to pick one entrepreneur's advice to listen to for the rest of my career, it would be Tim Ferriss's. More specifically, it would be this one question Tim has asked himself time and time again whenever he's feeling stuck: "What if I did the opposite for 48 hours?" You see, my biz partner and I have built a cold email infrastructure that can send 600k - 800k emails a month for ourselves…and for our clients. Now let me be clear… There are others sending millions a month, and volume...
