You only get a few swings

Whenever I feel stuck or impatient, or I’m leaping around like a pissed-off gorilla about a lack of progress, I have an interesting thought exercise that punches this monkey-brained frustration straight in the kisser...

Ready?

It all starts with getting your journeyman’s license. In the States, it took me 5 years of being an apprentice…

To eventually get my journeyman’s license.

Meaning it literally took 5 years to be considered qualified to work on your own without supervision.

We had a funny saying about this:

“There’s nothing more dangerous than a 5-year apprentice and a first-year journeyman.”

Why?

Because you realize at year 5 that you still don’t know your elbow from your arse. In some states, it takes an additional 2–2.5 years to get your master’s license (a total of around 14,000 working hours).

Ok back to the thought exercise…

Whenever I’m feeling stuck and impatient, I realize that business, any worthy goal, or skill mastery literally takes 5–7 years just to be “adequate.”

That’s a long ferking time!

Now let’s zoom out…

Because when you enter adulthood at the ripe age of 18, you’ve only got about 50 years before you’ll want to call it quits, sit on your rocking chair, and yell at the kids on your lawn.

Theoretically, you’ve only got about 6–8 “big swings” in your lifetime.

And by big swings, I mean chasing that worthwhile goal, developing that skill, building the business…

You get the point.

So why waste a 5–7-year span on small stuff? You might as well do something crazy big and risky: a goal with a massive reward on the other side.

Because you don’t have time for the small swings.

In any case, I’m about 6 years deep in my online career, the first 2–3 years being a disaster. Sure, I still get impatient. I see the 20-something-year-olds online making more than me and feel the envy in my forehead wrinkles…

…I get the shiny object syndrome with all this newfangled tech.

But when I look at who was with me at the beginning of this journey?

90% have quit.

And gone back to the small swings.

Take some time today to zoom out. Consider this day as “hours on the job” toward getting your master’s license. But make sure on the other side is something worthy of celebrating.

Because you only get so many at-bats.

All I got for today.

Catch ya soon,

Parker

There’s nothing worse than hopping on a sales call and having the prospect tell you they’re not interested before you’ve even had a chance to explain yourself. They’re irritated. you’ve got 5 minutes, ain't nobody having a good time. And that was me last week. In the first few minutes, the prospect practically shook their fists through the screen while telling me they weren’t interested in my services… …but were willing to hear my pitch. Zoinks, Scoob! Now, I’m taking about 10–15 sales calls...

Most folks think getting more cold email leads means: Buying more inboxes. Scraping a bigger list. And blasting enough emails to make the internet beg for mercy. Then they wonder why nobody bites, and tell the whole internet that cold email doesn't work. Enter my wild neck tattoo idea: Find people who’ve already shown you they need what you sell...with signals. And I ain’t talking “is she into you?” signals. I’m talking about the activity, trails, and traces your ICP is leaving out in the...

There’s one reply I get that makes me want to send the prospect directly to my competitors. Gift wrapped, with a little bow. This is the reply: “I’m talking to 10 other people with the same service. How are you different?” Ah yes. The ol’ boomer negotiation playbook. The most hilarious part of sending 500k+ emails a month is the feedback you get from your lovely friends, the boomers. Every day I laugh at my inbox because I usually get replies that range from: HoW dId U gEt My EmAiL?! I’ll...
