I have to share something that might make you uncomfortable... Without knowing who your business is serving... ...Your business might as well be selling wool to sheep. And your competitors will laugh all the way to the bank. Here's the deal: Businesses and dreams die every day because people try selling to "everyone." As the old saying goes.. ...When you sell to everyone, you sell to no one. Today I'm going to give you some examples of why knowing who you're selling too is so important. It’s the difference between losing to competitors and drawing in the right clients. Ready? One of my clients (we'll call him Steve for privacy) had a problem. Steve started a new business ghostwriting social media content. But Steve struggled to get clients. In fact, the only conversations he had with potential clients were awful. Why? Because those clients were being served by Steve's competitors already. Other ghostwriters who had more credentials than Steve. How could Steve even compete? Well I'm glad you asked... Because when Steve came to me for help. I asked Steve this simple question that changed everything: "Who is your target market?" Steve's reply: "Everyone?" That's the wrong answer Here’s the big idea: You must zero in on a sub-market or angle that other people aren’t dominating. Being specific helps you discover groups that want what you offer. This works even if you have fewer credentials than others. Steve’s problem wasn’t his skill... The problem was his strategy. Steve was trying to serve the exact same businesses all his competitors were. The fix? I asked Steve "who is your perfect customer?" And that's when we struck gold. Steve said Christian business owners. BOO YAH. We had it... ...A market Steve understood. And after using some scientific marketing research. Here's the strategy I gave Steve:
The result? Steve got 3 high ticket inbound clients. Not only were the clients paying well. They were his dream clients. Steve offered quick wins by providing solutions where his ideal customers spent time. Not only was Steve the only person offering ghostwriting services in the group... ...But he became a "favored" member for providing valuable solution based content everyday. Here's why this is so important... Most people like Steve give up after a few months of trying to start their business. Without the right strategy, you'll waste hours of time reaching out to people who don't need your help... ...You'll get rude responses and in turn will lose motivation.
