Social media almost killed my biz (here's why):

I had my first mid life crisis at the age of 29. At first it was a bad thing. But then I realized this mid life crisis was one of the greatest gifts an online biz owner can get. I'll tell you about the mid life crisis in a second. But first, did you hear the news? A Bluesky based social media platform launched last week. The name? Flashes. It’s pretty much the same thing as Instagram but with a different algorithm. And the masses are rushing over to sign up. But that’s why I’m here to tell you: Stay away from it. The last thing you or your business needs is more social media. Running your business only on social media might be the top reason your revenue isn’t growing. Here's a brutal dose of reality from my own experience: I've earned over 50,000,000 impressions on X in the past year. Sounds impressive, right? Well this is what gave me my first midlife crisis. How come? 'Cause traffic and income from X only make up 5-7% of my sales. Yes, you read that in the right way. All those viral posts, all that engagement... and it barely moves the needle on my bottom line. But realizing this was one of the best gifts ever. Now I know what actually works... My business had a solid increase of 232.1% in revenue from 2023 to 2024. The reason behind this insane growth is simple: Email. Nothing fancy. Just good ol' fashioned email. Relying on traffic from Twitter and LinkedIn nearly ruined my business overnight. Why? Social media platforms change. They get new owners. New algorithms. Or just blast so many ads people get bored with the platform and leave. A friend of mine who created the first dating app on Facebook told me about a rude awakening he had one day: “I woke up and saw that 50% of our business's traffic was gone overnight.” And poof. Zuckerberg made some changes, so my friend sold his app for a lot less than it was worth. This is the cold truth that influencers aren't telling you... Look at the TikTok ban. Politics almost ruined the hard work these creators put into building their followings. Almost everything disappears overnight. That’s why I’m beating my chest about email. Remember MySpace? What about AOL Instant Messenger or Tumblr? People’s attention online shifts. Platforms come and go. But email? It ain’t going anywhere… Here's the fastest history lesson you've ever had: Queen Elizabeth was the first person of high power to send an email…In 1976. Email has been around THAT long. Even cooler? Email isn’t subject to Elon Musk takeovers, or algorithms that rather show thirst traps than your valuable posts. Because email is the lifeblood of any successful online business.
